18 Spring Athletes Named to All-NEAC Teams
Fredricks and Robinson Named Players of the Year

Keuka College was well represented on the All-NEAC teams as 18 different student athletes were honored.  Keuka also sported three Coach of the Year, two Player of the Year, and one NEAC Tournament MVP winners this Spring.

Headlining the long list of recognized players were junior golfer Josh Robinson (Barton, N.Y./Tioga) and rookie softball player Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury).  Both players were named there sports Player of the Year.  Robinson finished first at the NEAC Golf Championships with a two-day total of 148, three strokes ahead of the second place finisher.  Fredricks led the Storm back to the NCAA Tournament and a second straight NEAC Tournament title after batting .406 and leading the Storm in hits (41), home runs (5), and RBIs (38).

Keuka also sported three NEAC Coach of the Year winners.  Matt Tantalo for men's tennis, Jamie Burke for softball, and Seth Fikes for baseball.  Tantalo led the Storm to a 3-1 NEAC mark and a second place finish in the regular season.  Burke guided Keuka to a 16-1 conference record while winning both the regular season and tournament championships.  Fikes skippered the Storm to an 8-5 conference record and a fourth place finish.

In men's tennis, six players were named to the All-Conference teams.  Leading the way for Keuka was rookie Patrick Barker (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) who was named to the second team in flight No. 2 singles.  Joining Barker on the second team in singles were sophomores Mike Fischer (Katskill Bay, N.Y./Lake George) in the fourth flight and Casey Dahlstrom (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) in the sixth flight.  Named to the All-NEAC honorable mention team in singles were senior Andy Oberg (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) in the first flight, sophomore Will Fisher (Watkinsville, GA/Oconee) in the third flight, and junior Justin Roe (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) in the fifth flight.

All six players were named to the All-NEAC second team in doubles.  Barker and Oberg in the first flight, Fisher and Fischer in the second flight, and Roe and Dahlstrom in third flight.

In softball, seven players were chosen for All-NEAC honors led by All-NEAC first team selections Fredricks and sophomore outfielder Jessica VanScoter (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood).  Named to the second team were senior pitcher Jen Shaughnessy (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy), senior shortstop Amanda Witter (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell), freshman outfielder Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), and freshman third basemen Liz Ripp (Glenfield, N.Y./South Lewis).  Rookie Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) was picked for the honorable mention team.

Shaughnessy was also chosen as the NEAC Tournament MVP, after going 3-0on the hill and allowing only one earned run in 16 innings.

Baseball sported four players on the All-NEAC teams.  Sophomore pitcher Kyle Sherin (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda), junior second basemen Alex Paquette (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton), and senior first basemen Mike Perrone (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) were all picked for the second team.  Senior outfielder Collin Mullins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) was chosen for the honorable mention team.

Keuka Ends Season with One-Run Loss
Fall to Eastern Connecticut State 4-3 in NCAAs

The Keuka softball team had its magical 2008 season come to an end after falling 4-3 to the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State in its second game of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.  The Storm end the year with a 23-9 overall record.  Eastern Connecticut State, which has won the national championship five times, improves to 27-13 and will face the winner of the Montclair State vs. Springfield game at 4 pm today.

For the second game in a row Keuka scored in the top of the first.  Senior shortstop Amanda Witter (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) led off the game with a single and was followed by a Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) sac bunt in which she reached safely.  Rookie Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) then laid down another sac bunt that ECS threw over the first basemen's head to allow two runs to score.  A nice diving catch by the Warriors centerfielder limited the damage to just two runs for the Storm.

Senior ace Jen Shaughnessy (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy) then worked an almost perfect bottom of the first, allowing just a walk.  Keuka was then held scoreless in the top of the second, while Eastern Connecticut State cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second.  The Warriors leadoff hitter reached on an error and was followed by a base hit up the middle.  After a sac bunt, Keuka committed another error allowing an unearned run to cross the plate.

Shaughnessy pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the third, stranding two runners.  ECS had another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth but a nice catch by Engelbert up against the centerfield fence ended that rally and preserved Keuka's 2-1 lead.

The Storm threatened in the top of the fifth loading the bases on two hits and a walk with just one out.  Keuka was unable to plate a run after a groundout and a strikeout.  In the bottom half of the fifth, the Warrior bats woke up, belting four hits including two doubles and a triple.  ECS plated three runs to go ahead 4-2.

Keuka quickly answered with a run in the top of the sixth after Shaughnessy clubbed a double and was drove in by a Jessica VanScoter (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) single. 

Down to its last three outs in the top of the seventh, Keuka's Kate Kraus (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) worked a lead-off walk and was bunted over to second perfectly by classmate Liz Ripp (Glenfield, N.Y./South Lewis).  The Storm then lined out and popped up to end the game.

Keuka finished with five hits while ECS ended with eight.  Shaughnessy falls to 12-6 on the year after tossing her 13th complete game while striking out one.

Storm Fall 7-1 to Gulls
Keuka drops NCAA Opener

The Keuka College softball team lost its first game of the 2008 NCAA Tournament at Plattsburgh State on Thursday, May 8, by a score of 7-1 to the Gulls of Endicott College.  Keuka struck first but were unable to hold the lead as they fall to 23-8 on the year while Endicott improves to an impressive 39-4.

The Storm got off to a great start in the top of the first when senior leadoff hitter Amanda Witter (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) led off with a single and was followed by a infield bunt single from rookie Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).  After the next two batters got out, Keuka senior Jen Shaughnessy (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy) delivered an RBI single over the first basemen's head.

The Gulls quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning as they loaded the bases with two singles and an error before plating the tying run with sac fly to right field.

In the second inning, Keuka was held to just one hit, a single by freshman Liz Ripp (Glenfield, N.Y./South Lewis).  Endicott took the lead in the bottom of the second after two singles, a throwing error, and a suicide squeeze scored two more runs.  The score would remain 3-1 in favor of the Gulls for the next three innings.

The Storm ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth after a triple was followed by another suicide squeeze to make it 4-1.  Still in the bottom of the sixth, the Gulls then loaded the bases and belted a two-run double.  A dropped pop fly then made it 7-1 before the Storm were able to get out of the inning.  The Storm went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Keuka's Shaughnessy suffers her fifth loss (12-5) despite allowing just three earned and striking out five in six innings of work.  Shaughnessy's counterpart for Endicott, Jen Elwell, improved to 15-3 on the year while allowing just seven hits and striking out four.  Shaughnessy also led the Keuka bats going 2-for-3 with the Storm's only RBI.

Freshman centerfielder Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) belted a double that one hopped the fence while Witter, Bilbow, Ripp, and sophomore Jessica VanScoter (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) each ripped a single.

The Storm will next play Friday, May 9, against the No. 5 seeded Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State at 10 am.  The Warriors lost to Cortland State by a score of 14-5 in its NCAA opener.

Storm Draw Endicott in First Round
Regional to be Played in Plattsburgh, NY

The Keuka College softball team was awarded the No. 7 seed for its first round regional of the NCAA Tournament.  With the seeding comes a first round match up against the No. 2 seed Endicott College (Mass.) this Thursday, May 8 at 2 pm. 

The regional is being played at Plattsburgh State and also features the following teams:

No. 1 Montclair State (42-4)
No. 2 Endicott (38-4)
No. 3 St. John Fisher (24-19)
No. 4 Cortland State (39-11)
No. 5 Eastern Conn. State (26-10)
No. 6 Springfield (29-15)
No. 7 Keuka (23-7)

If Keuka wins its first round game they would then play the winner of the St. John Fisher vs. Springfield game on Friday, May 9 at 2 pm.  If the Storm were to lose its first round game then they would play the loser of the Cortland State vs. Eastern Connecticut State on Friday at 10 am.

NCAAs Here We Come
Storm Repeat as NEAC Tournament Champions

The Keuka College softball team won the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament Championship for the second time in as many years after defeating Philadelphia Biblical University 6-3 on Saturday.

The Storm will again represent the NEAC in the NCAA Tournament.  The Storm improve to 23-7 overall while PBU falls to 17-17.  The Crimson Eagles defeated Penn State-Berks 9-0 to set up the championship game with Keuka.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, PBU plated two runs in the top of the second.  Keuka answered with six runs of its own in the bottom half of the second.  The Crimson Eagles would score once more in the top of the third to get within 6-3.  That would be the rest of the scoring in the game as both teams were held scoreless over the final four innings of action.

Keuka's Jen Shaughnessy (LeRoy, N.Y./LeRoy) picked up her twelfth win of the year while going the distance.  Shaughnessy struck out three and allowed just one earned run and five singles.  She was named the NEAC Tournament MVP after going 3-0 and allowing just one earned run (0.56 ERA) in 16 innings while striking out 13 and holding batters to a .153 batting average.

The offense was guided by rookie left fielder Denise Bilbow (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) who batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, and two stolen bases.  Bilbow batted almost .800 in the Tournament while going 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.

Fellow freshman Sarah Fredricks (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) added two RBIs with one hit in three at bats.  Freshmen Liz Ripp (Glens Falls, N.Y./South Lewis) and Morgan Engelbert (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas Edison) each drove in a run.

The Storm will find out its seeding and schedule for the Big Dance this Monday, May 5.

Storm Season Ends with One-Run Loss
Keuka Falls to Berks 11-10

Keuka's 2008 season came to end on Friday as they lost its second game of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament to Penn State-Berks by a score of 11-10.  The Storm end the season with a 9-28 record while Berks improves to 15-23 and will now take on Cazenovia College in tomorrow 9 am game.

Keuka started off on fire, plating four runs in the top of the first.  Berks would strike back with three in the bottom of the second and six in the third.  The Nittany Lions would go up by seven (11-4) after two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  Keuka kept fighting as they scored the game's final six runs.  Three in the sixth, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth.  Keuka couldn't complete the comeback as the tying run was left stranded in scoring position.

Sophomore Kyle Sherin (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) suffered the loss while freshman Bobby Potter (Montour Falls, N.Y./Odessa-Montour) pitched five and 1/3 stellar innings of relief, allowing just two runs.

Senior Matt Schaffer (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) led the sticks going 3-for-5 with three runs scored while also throwing out two would be base stealers.  Freshman Mike Marsh (Elmira, N.Y./Southside) batted 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. 

Junior Ed Schoeneck (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) knocked in four runs while also scoring once as junior Alex Paquette (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) and senior Collin Mullins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) each finished with two hits a piece.  Junior Craig Pittinger (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) chipped in with a pair of RBIs.

Storm to Host NEAC's
May 2-3

After winning the 2008 regular season North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship, the Keuka College softball team will host the NEAC conference double elimination tournament this Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.

Keuka will be the the No. 1 seed after finishing with a 16-1 conference mark.  Penn State-Berks claimed the No. 2 seed with a 14-4 record while the Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical University, the only NEAC team to defeat the Storm, is the No.3 seed with a 12-6 mark.  Baptist Bible College finished as the No. 4 seed with a 12-6 record but lost (1-0) in Tuesday's play-in game to the No. 5 seeded Spartans of D'Youville College(11-7).

The Storm will take on the Spartans at 10 am followed by the Berks and PBU at noon.  The two losing teams would then play at 2 pm with the two winning teams playing at 4 pm.

Saturday's action would pit the winner of game three against the loser of game four at 10 am.  The winner of game four would then take on the winner of game five at noon.  If necessary, the seventh game would be played at 2 pm.

Keuka Finishes Fifth

The Keuka golf team finished fifth out of eight teams at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championships, held at the Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan on Thursday and Friday.  Keuka's Josh Robinson (Barton, N.Y./Tioga) was the medalist for the two-day tournament but it wasn't enough to help Keuka win as they finished with a score of 692. 

Keystone College won the NEAC Championship with a two-day score of 620.  Behind the Giants were Penn State-Harrisburg (668), Philadelphia Biblical University (670), and Penn State-Berks (685).

Robinson held a one-stroke lead after day one, shooting a three-over 75.  On day two, he shot a one-over 73 to finish with a two-day total of 148.  Three strokes ahead of Keystone's Sean Misstishin (151).  After Robinson Keuka's next finisher wasn't until 22nd place while the Giants finished in second, third, fifth, and two seventh places.

Junior Kevin Lowry (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) took second for the Storm in 22nd place with a 175 (86, 89).  Classmate Alex Clark (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac) finished in 27th place with a 183 (92, 91) while rookie Darron Hall (Owego, N.Y./Owego) placed 31st with a 186 (99, 87).  Rounding out Keuka's top-five was senior Josh Menio (Rock Stream, N.Y./Penn Yan) in 33rd place with a 188 (96, 92).

The Storm will next finish its 2007-08 season by competing in the Elmira College Spring Invitational this Monday, April 28.

Storm Put on Strong Showing at NEACs
Almost Win all Three Doubles Matches

The Keuka College men's tennis team put on an excellent display at the individual part of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships on Friday.  All six Storm players finished as high as second in either singles or doubles.

In No. 1 singles, Andy Oberg (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial), was ranked as the No. 2 seed out of four.  Oberg was upset in his first match (6-4, 2-6, 7-5) by his No. 3 ranked Penn State-Harrisburg opponent.  Oberg rebounded to win the consolation match by a score of 6-2, 6-1 against a Keystone opponent.

In flight No. 2, rookie Patrick Barker (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) was also ranked as the No. 2 seed and defeated his Penn State-Berks opponent (2-6, 6-3, 7-5) in his first match-up.  Barker then fell in the championship match (6-1, 6-1) to the top ranked Penn State-Harrisburg player.

Sophomore Will Fisher (Watkinsville, GA/Oconee) finished third in flight No. 3 singles after falling 7-5, 6-0 in his first match and winning by default in the consolation match.  Fellow sophomore Mike Fischer (Katskill Bay, N.Y./Lake George) finished second in No. 4 singles.  Fischer, the No. 3 seed, pulled off the upset over the No. 2 seed (6-4, 6-2) in his first match before falling (6-2, 6-0) in the championship match.

Junior Justin Roe (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) also took third overall in the fifth flight of singles after losing (6-2, 6-1) and then winning (6-1, 6-3) in the consolation match.  Sophomore Casey Dahlstrom (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) almost took first in No. 6 singles.  Dahlstrom won (6-0, 6-0) in his first match-up and lost a close match (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) in the championship.

In the doubles portion of the match, all three Keuka duo's finished in second place.  Oberg and Barker won 8-4 before falling 8-6 in the championship match.  Fisher and Fischer won 8-5 then lost 8-6 in the finals.  Roe and Dahlstrom won 8-4 before losing 8-5 in the championship match.

The Storm will next complete its 2008 season by finishing a match that was postponed earlier in the year against Elmira College on Wednesday, April 30 at 3 pm.

Storm Third in Team Part of NEACs
Lose to PSH; Blank Keystone

After finishing second overall in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) during the regular season, the Keuka men's tennis took third place during the team portion of the NEAC Championships on Thursday.  The Storm started off by being upset by the No. 3 Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg by a score of 5-0.  Keuka then rebounded to shutout the Giants of Keystone College 5-0.

Against Harrisburg, only two of the six singles matches were able to finish with senior Andy Oberg (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) losing a tough match in flight No. 1 by a score of 7-5 (7-5), 6-3.  Rookie Patrick Barker (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) then fell 6-2, 6-0 in flight No. 2.  The two then teamed up in flight No. 1 doubles and lost a close match 8-6.  Sophomore's Will Fisher (Watkinsville, GA/Oconee) and Mike Fischer (Katskill Bay, N.Y./Lake George) fell 9-7 in No. 2 doubles while junior Justin Roe (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) and sophomore Casey Dahlstrom (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) fell 8-2 in flight No. 3.

In the consolation match, Keuka blanked the No. 4 seeded Giants of Keystone by a score of 5-0.  Barker won No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3) while Fisher won the second flight (6-4, 6-4). 

Oberg and Barker won No. 1 doubles easily (8-1).  Fisher and Fischer then took No. 2 doubles (8-2) while Roe and Dahlstrom also won 8-2 in flight No. 3.

Penn State-Berks defeated Penn State-Harrisburg 5-3 in the championship match.

The Storm will next compete in the individual part of the NEAC Championships beginning tomorrow, Friday, April 25.
