Criminology and Criminal Justice

This program combines a nucleus of criminology and criminal justice knowledge with the enlightenment of the liberal arts. It aspires to use knowledge from the social sciences to improve our quality and security of life.

Students are prepared for work in areas related to criminal justice, and provided with a strong background in social issues and a sensitive understanding of human problems. As outcomes, graduates may seek entry into a variety of related fields including probation, juvenile services, law enforcement, corrections, paralegal activities, community action groups, private security, and research.

The major includes criminology (the study of crime and criminal behavior) as well as criminal justice (the study of law enforcement courts and corrections), in addition to options in criminalistics (forensic science). Relevant courses in sociology, psychology, political science/law, and statistics are also required. To complement theoretical components, there is an extensive experiential component consisting of two criminology and criminal justice Field Periods and a one-semester internship in the senior year.
