The Keuka College Academic Network Policy
I. Welcome
As a new member of the Keuka College community,
you are entitled to access our Local Area Network (LAN). The College currently
utilizes a Windows 2003 file server with approximately 3000 network clients, or
users. The operating systems located on campus include Windows 98, 2000 &
XP.
The primary software applications on campus include Netscape Navigator, Internet
Explorer and Microsoft Office 2000 & 2003.
After obtaining
a network user account from Information Technology (IT) Services, a new user may
access the network at the following locations on campus:
·
The Micro-Computer lab in Lightner Library
·
The Electronic Classroom located in Hegeman 410
·
Jephson Computer Lab Room 103
·
All residence halls have network connection capability. Students
must provide their own personal computer*.
* Note:
Student computers must meet system requirements established by IT Services.
Students should check with IT Services during normal business hours at
315-279-5217 (or simply extension 5217 on campus) or visit our website at
http://www.keuka.edu/administration/IT for these system requirements.
The network may be down periodically for system upgrades and
maintenance. Users will be notified of any scheduled down times. Please do
NOT attempt to access the network during these times. Access will be
denied and may further increase the down time of the server.
II. Services Provided
Software Applications **
The following software applications are available to all users on the Keuka College LAN:
- Netscape Navigator (4.08 and higher) and Internet Explorer web browsers.
- Microsoft Office 2000 (Professional Edition) or 2003 (Professional
Edition) may be found on all campus owned workstations.
This package includes Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Publisher.
The following software packages are used in some academic classes and may be found in the Electronic Classroom:
SPSS (a social science statistical program)
Inspiration (an educational software package)
Adobe Photoshop
Network Printing
Network printing allows multiple computers to be connected to one printer.
Computers in the Micro-Computer lab, Electronic Classroom, and Lightner Library
are connected to network laser printers and are available to all network users.
Print jobs are on a "first come, first serve" basis. All print jobs
should be academic in nature. E-mail and recreational-based web sites are not
academic in nature and should not be printed.
Electronic Mail
Electronic mail, or e-mail, is available from every networked
computer on campus. Each network user has his or her own e-mail address that
permits the user to send and receive e-mail. A user’s e-mail address is USERNAME@MAIL.KEUKA.EDU.
This e-mail address is not case sensitive, but it must be typed
correctly or it will not be delivered properly. Some e-mail systems are case
sensitive and it is recommended that the user check with his or her correspondent(s)
to find out if their address is case sensitive. If using lab computers, users must surrender their computer
during busy times if he or she is using e-mail or just browsing the internet.
Since user e-mail directories have a space limitation, users should delete unnecessary
e-mail regularly. Once a user e-mail directory is full, the user will be unable
to perform network operations such as access or send e-mail and network printing.
A user must contact IT Services during normal business hours to regain these
network operations.
World Wide Web (Internet) Access
Every user account has access to the World Wide Web (WWW) via Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. The College homepage is http://www.keuka.edu and can be used as a valuable research tool. EBSCOhost, Encyclopedia Americana Online, and the Library Catalog are accessible through the library homepage. In addition to its research capabilities, the Internet can be used for recreational purposes. While there is minimal regulation by the College on accessing web sites, users must follow all state and federal laws that govern Internet material when browsing the web. Additionally, while using the computer labs, users must surrender their computer during busy times if he or she is using the Internet for recreational purposes. Failure to abide the two aforementioned Internet rules may result in termination of the user account and possible criminal prosecution.
File Storage, Retrieval, and Security
File storage is the most basic and important service offered by a network. When a user obtains an account, he or she gains access to the College’s file server. Every user on the network has access to a private directory (F: drive) on the file server. IT Services recommends saving documents on the network. Benefits of saving documents on the file server include:
Security: Only the user can access the documents saved on the F: drive. Each user must be logged in to access the F: drive.
Availability: Each user can access his or her files from any networked computer on campus
or via
http://keukanet.keuka.edu/myhome. Users will not need to remember diskettes if files are saved on the network.
Recoverability: The files are backed up daily. If the file is accidentally lost or deleted, IT Services can restore the file for the user. If the file is located on a floppy diskette or a local hard drive, IT Services cannot guarantee file recovery.
Reliability: The file server is much more reliable than a floppy diskette. Floppy diskettes are extremely susceptible to damage and files are easily lost. Floppy diskettes are
not reliable and are more susceptible to computer viruses.
Each network user has access to "shared" drives on the network. The common shared drive is the S: drive. Other users on the network can access files located on this network drive and therefore security is minimal. The S: drive includes material relevant to the Keuka College community such as Field Period paperwork and the Student Handbook.
III. User Responsibilities and Network Policies
Rules and Regulations
Upon signing the network user account agreement, you are accepting the following rules and regulations stated in the Keuka College Academic Network Policy and/or future policies implemented by IT Services. Policies will be strictly enforced by IT Services.
- Never tell anyone your password.
- Never allow anyone to log in using your username and never let him or her use your computer while you are logged in.
- Never send global e-mail messages. Global e-mail messages include #everyone, #students, #staff, or #faculty.
- Always log out of the computer when you are finished.
- Sending chain letters or chain mail is strictly prohibited.
- Attempting to find out someone else’s password is prohibited.
- E-mail to mail groups should contain business pertinent to Keuka College.
- The e-mail system should not be used as an advertising media. Examples include sending e-mail to one or more groups advertising a couch for sale or wishing students "good luck on finals."
- Attempting to break into, destroy data, or obtain any unauthorized files on any College computer or server is strictly prohibited.
- Knowingly infecting any College computer or server with a computer virus is strictly prohibited.
- During busy times, users must be engaged in academic work or surrender his or her computer when using the computer labs.
- When you leave Keuka (graduate, withdraw, take a
leave of absence, etc.) your e-mail account will be terminated.
Penalties for Network Policy Violators
Every time you, as the user, log into the network, you are agreeing to abide by all network rules, regulations, and policies. If you either knowingly or unknowingly violate any network rule, regulation, and/or policy, you will be subject to one or all of the following penalties:
- 1st minor infraction will result in the user account being disabled immediately. It is the responsibility of the offender to report to IT Services to have the account reinstated.
- 2nd minor infraction will result in the user account being disabled for the remainder of the semester.
- 3rd minor infraction will result in the user account being terminated indefinitely.
- 1st major offense will result in the immediate termination of the offender’s user account.
