Even though a fire recently destroyed his Lyons home, Shawn Long has two reasons to be thankful. First, and most important, he, his wife and children were not hurt. Still, Long faced an uphill battle. Under the best of circumstances, raising 10 children can be a challenge. But when a fire claims your home and belongings, that challenge becomes nearly insurmountable. Fortunately, Long is part of the Keuka College family and that is the second reason why he is thankful. |
Long is pursuing a master’s degree in management through the Accelerated Studies for Adults Program (ASAP). One of his cohort members is Julie Bies ’06, ASAP enrollment coordinator. Bies wanted to help Long so she contacted Anne Killen, director of administrative services in the Center for Professional Studies and International Programs. Killen referred Bies to Penny Sutterby, community service coordinator in the Center for Experiential Learning. “I had the Office of Communications put a message [requesting donations for the Long family] on Announce and people began donating items right away,” said Sutterby. To deliver the items to Long and his family earlier this week, the College’s facilities department provided a moving van and two drivers to distribute the more than 44 large bags to the family. |
“My wife, Tonia, and I can never thank you all for the wonderful assistance, prayers, well wishes and donations,” said Long. “You have truly demonstrated that Keuka is a family of caring and dedicated individuals whose embrace of love and concern reaches far beyond normal academic boundaries. Keuka College is a remarkable community.” According to Sutterby, the family lived in Lyons when their house burned down. They currently reside in Geneva until their house is rebuilt or a new one is constructed. Assisting in the delivery of items were Sutterby, Bies, sophomore unified childhood/special education major Amanda Guzik, senior unified childhood/special education major Julia Snyder, junior management major Susan Carpenter, and Kelsey Folckemer ‘05 secretary in the Center for Professional Studies and International Programs. |
