Men’s Basketball:
Not Tall but Talented

Todd Lincoln

The 2006-07 men’s basketball team certainly doesn’t pose any threats on paper, with only three players above the height of 6-4.

But what the Storm lack in height, they certainly make up for in talented guards.

Head Coach George Wunder returns three starting guards, including senior captains Todd Lincoln and Corey Edwards. The duo will play key roles as Keuka looks to improve on its 16-10 overall and 11-5 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) records.

The Storm, a perennial contender for the NEAC championship, made it to the semifinals of the NEAC tournament last season and earned a berth in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.

Lincoln, a 6-foot point guard, is the team’s leading retuning scorer after pouring in 12.9 points per game (335 points). The All-NEAC second team performer also led the Storm in assists, dishing off 5.9 per game (153 assists), good enough for 23rd in the nation.  Lincoln also paced the Storm in steals with 59 (2.3). He needs just 179 points to hit the coveted 1,000-point mark, while needing just 120 assists to become the all-time leader in Keuka annals.  Lincoln needs just 35 3-pointers to break the school mark of 146.

Lincoln’s backcourt teammate Corey Edwards, is right with Lincoln in most of the statistical categories.  The 6-2 guard averaged 12.1 points per game (314) last season while leading the Storm with 43 3-pointers. Edwards needs just 152 points to become the eighth player in Keuka history to reach the 1,000-point mark.  Edwards also needs just 24 3-pointers to become No. 1 in Keuka annals.

Sophomore Robert McDowell is the only other retuning starter. He netted 5.3 points per game (138 points) last season. The 6-foot guard will be counted on a lot more this season to use his quickness and athletic ability to cause havoc on opponent’s defenses.

Returning to the frontcourt for Keuka is senior forward Steve Willson, who started the first 14 games for Keuka last season and averaged 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds. Also back are sophomores Matt Crabb (6-7) and Josh Robinson (6-4). Senior John Thorr (6-7) is also back after a year away from the team.

Senior swingman Bill McKee had a coming-out season last year and will be looked on to fill a much bigger role this season.  Sophomore guard Kaheem Littles also returns after averaging 2 points in his freshman campaign.

Keuka  begins its season at the Utica College Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 17. The Storm will also host first round games in the illustrious JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Basketball Tournament beginning Jan. 10.

Women’s Basketball:
Plenty of Experience

Sarah Dorman

Lindsay Baker, one of the most dominant players in Keuka College women’s basketball history, graduated last May.

But don’t expect fellow coaches to feel sorry for Coach Dave Sweet, who guided his team to a 16-10 record, a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament title, and an ECAC birth a season ago.

That’s because Sweet returns five of his top six scorers, including his starting backcourt.

Orchestrating the Storm’s potent offense for a fourth straight season will be 5-10 point guard Sarah Dorman. Dorman finished with 159 assists (6.1 per game) last season to lead not only the NEAC but Rochester Area College teams. Currently third all-time in assists at Keuka, Dorman needs just 147 more to break the school mark of 517. Dorman also grabbed 5 rebounds and netted 5.2 points per game last season while leading the Storm with 15 3-pointers. She needs only 25 more long balls to become the all-time leader.

The other retuning senior guard is All-NEAC honorable mention pick Alison Berwanger, the Storm’s second leading scorer last season, averaging 11.7 per contest.  The 5-7 Berwanger ranks 15th in school history with 663 career points and needs 337 more to become the ninth Keuka player ever to reach the 1,000-point plateau.  Berwanger also led the Storm in steals (56) and made free-throws (115) while also grabbing 3.6 rebounds a game and dishing off 82 assists.

Leading the frontcourt will be the reigning NEAC tournament MVP Pam Gardner. The 5-11 junior forward enjoyed a breakout season last year, averaging 10.1 points per game and shooting the ball at a 46 percent clip. Gardner also averaged 7.2 rebounds a game, including a team-high 90 offensive caroms.

Junior forward Abby Brewer (5-11) will have a much bigger role this season after averaging 4.8 points and 3.3 rebounds a game last season.  Junior 3-point specialist, Erica Golden (5-8) returns for her junior campaign after netting 4.6 points and 2.4 boards a game.

Five sophomores return including 5-8 guard Lindsay Humberstone, who played in 21 games last season and knocked down 13 long balls. Fellow guards Ashley Kast (5-7) and Trista Partridge (5-7) combined to score 57 points while forwards Angela Viggiani (6-0) and Kate Quinn (5-11) netted 40 points and hauled in 37 rebounds combined.

Keuka starts its season at home against William Smith College Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. The Storm will also host first round games in the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament in January.

Synchronized Swimming:
No. 5 with a Bullet

Vercera Harvey-White (front) and Jennifer Kaminska

The Keuka College synchronized swimming team heads into the 2006-07 season ranked No. 5 in the country.

Along with that lofty ranking, comes plenty of experience. Head coach Nancy Wightman loses just one swimmer from the team that finished No. 5 overall and was the top Division III finisher at the U.S. Collegiate Championships. And while All-Collegiate performer and captain Rebecca Story will be hard to replace, Wightman has 13 veterans and five newcomers on hand as Keuka looks to retain its place among the nation’s elite.

Heading the list of returnees is sophomore Corenn Cookerly.  Cookerly, an All-Collegiate swimmer, was part of the Storm trio that captured third place at the ECAC Championships and 10th place at the national meet. Cookerly also finished ninth in the solo routine and was a part of the team routine that finished seventh at the national meet.

Fellow sophomore Jennifer Kaminska was also part of the Storm trio that performed so well on swimming’s biggest stage. Kaminska was part of the team routine while also swimming in a duet that claimed five top-five finishes last season, including a fourth place finish at the ECAC Championships.

Wightman also brings back a stellar senior class. Vercera Harvey-White, Kai Jones, Tiffany Rock, and Kera Sauer are all part of the Storm’s top team routine. Harvey-White is Kaminska’s duet partner and enjoyed a break-out junior campaign last season. Jones and Rock formed another sensational duet for Keuka with one first place finish while Jones, Rock, and Sauer provided Keuka with two dominant trios.

Sophomore Nicole Murphy is also back and represents the final person on the Storm’s seventh in the nation team routine.  Seniors Jessica Yurko, the Storm’s best “C” figures swimmer, and Kieren Welch also return.

Sophomores Amber Barrett, Patrice Franks-Rouse, Samantha Johnston (an Academic All-American last season), and Adriana Riano all return for their second season with the club and are members of the Storm’s second team routine.

Keuka faces a tough schedule this season competing against Canisius College (No. 6 in the nation) and Ohio State University (No. 2) in its first three meets. The Storm will finish its season by competing in the national meet at Wheaton College March 21-23
