in front of a word or phrase means that word MUST be on a site.
+pizza +pepperoni

in front of a word or phrase means that word MUST NOT be on a site.
+pizza -anchovies (pizza not anchovies)

quotes around a phrase means the words enclosed by the quotes MUST be
on the site, next to each other, and in that order.
+"library of congress" will get you fewer,
better hits than +library +congress
Directories
A directory contains sites that have been selected by people.
- Smaller than Search Engines
- Often part of a Search Engine
- The best include annotations Subject headings can help you refine your search
Search Engines
A search engine contains sites collected by computer.
- Internet search engines do NOT search the entire Internet.
- They search an index that has been created by computer.
- Much larger than directories. i.e. more hits
