English as a Second Language

Keuka College offers a six-week summer intensive English program, taught by Keuka College faculty. The program includes 20 hours of instruction per week and is designed to help students improve their accuracy and proficiency in academic English.

The program also includes some off-campus trips to local points of interest and the opportunity to spend some time with an American family. Students who participate in the summer intensive ESL program benefit from the highly individualized instruction and attention that they receive, and they experience a smoother transition to life at an American college.

Courses

As a student in the summer intensive English program, you'll take two courses. Students who successfully complete both courses will receive six academic credits that may be applied toward a degree at Keuka College. Successful completion of the program will provide you with the opportunity for admission into Keuka College’s full-time bachelor’s or master’s degree programs. 

ESL 101: Academic Reading and Writing

Academic Reading and Writing is an intermediate intensive language course for nonnative English-speaking international students. The goal of this course is to further develop students’ competence and accuracy in their use and understanding of written academic English in order to build the reading and writing proficiency in English that they will need to be successful within the context of an American College or University. This will be accomplished through exposure to a variety of academic written texts and extensive grammar review and writing practice.

ESL 102: Academic Listening and Speaking

Academic Listening and Speaking is an intermediate intensive language course for nonnative English-speaking international students. The goal of this course is to further develop students’ competence and accuracy in their use and understanding of spoken academic English in order to build the listening and speaking proficiency in English that they will need to be successful within the context of an American College or University. This will be accomplished through exposure to a variety of academic listening texts and extensive oral practice.

Estimated Cost

$4,500 (estimated cost includes tuition, room, meals, and off-campus excursions when the ESL program is in session. This cost does not include registration fees, books, insurance, travel, or other personal expenses and room and meals when the ESL program is not in session.)
