Biography

After graduating from Central Washington University with a degree in criminal justice, Mike’s educational path turned toward comparative religion and ethics, obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.  At U.S.C., he was chosen as one of the top teaching assistants, being selected to teach in their prestigious honors program, and he was also the only religion doctoral student to complete his Ph.D. in four years.

His academic interests remain centered around ethics, philosophy, and religion, the three subject areas he covers at Keuka College.  Besides authoring over thirty articles and book chapters, Mike is now working on his third book, covering the Methodist experience in the Pacific Northwest.  This book breaks new ground in how regional geography can impact belief systems, explaining that it was the unique geography in the Northwest that stymied what was then the largest and most powerful religion in the United States.

He finds the Keuka students a fun group to teach, and enjoys challenges them.  One of his favorite challenges is the “Search for Socrates” contest he runs each semester for his classes.  A small statue of the famous philosopher is hidden somewhere in Yates County, with academic clues posted online.  To say the contest is “competitive” is an understatement! Here is a video that gives a bird's eye view into the contest.

Although Mike is from the Pacific Northwest, he finds a lot of similarities between Yates County and where he grew up.  “There were orchards and vineyards everywhere in the Yakima Valley, and it’s nice to see so many of those around here,” he says.  Mike has taught at Keuka College since 1999.
