Student-Run Musical 'Heathers' to Be Performed This Weekend

The dark comedy will be staged in Norton Chapel from April 27-30.

Keuka College students will stage the musical “Heathers” Thursday, April 27, through Sunday, April 30, in Norton Chapel on the College campus. Showtimes are 7 p.m. April 27, 28, and 30; and 9:30 p.m. April 29. Performances are free and open to the public.

Directed and produced by Milaya “Mia” Colwell ’25, “Heathers” is based on the classic 1989 film of the same name. Westerberg High is ruled by a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing junta: Heather, Heather, and Heather. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend who plans to put the Heathers in their place.

This is Mia’s second stint at directing and producing an on-campus musical. Last spring, she oversaw the jukebox musical “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” which featured an all-first-year cast and crew. This year’s student ensemble numbers around 25 members of the cast and crew.

“Rehearsals are going phenomenally, and the cast has put so much work into this musical,” said Mia. “Everyone working on- and off-stage are students, so I am blown away when they have lines, choreography, and staging completely memorized when they have to juggle classes and jobs, as well. It’s all finally coming together. I am excited for opening night in just a few days so they can show off all they have done!”

“Heathers” is part of the College’s annual Lake Break Spring Weekend, April 27-30. A variety of events will be held on campus, including a Saturday lineup of music, games, food trucks, and fireworks that are open to the public. The event is free for students but tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. The ticket price includes a BBQ dinner and one item from a dessert food truck.

NOTE: “Heathers” contains strong language and mature themes. Children under 14 will not be permitted to attend and audience discretion is advised.
