Writing & Communication Arts

Writing, Connecting, and Communicating

Writing makes things happen. As a Writing and Communication Arts major, you'll have the opportunity to refine your unique voice and harness your creativity. You'll study the power and importance of storytelling in its many forms and do so in intimate, classroom settings with other like-minded writers.

The benefits of this program are both practical and personal. You'll cultivate critical awareness of the human experience and pursue creative ways to compose and communicate your ideas and stories. By becoming a flexible, problem-solving, and technologically savvy communicator, you'll be prepared for effective entry into a wide range of careers.

Program Highlights

An Internship Every Year

Every year, beginning your first year, you’ll design a Field Period® experience that could take you into a newsroom, a television studio, a publishing house, a marketing firm, an arts center – anyplace where clear, crisp communication is essential. You’ll work alongside industry professionals, sharpen your craft, and expand your professional network.

Practical Writing Expertise

The Writing and Communication Arts program focuses on cultivating expertise in writing for an array of media and genres, ranging from creative fiction to social media marketing. You'll graduate with a robust portfolio of work that encompasses class assignments and real-world compositions from experiential projects and Field Period experiences.

Look at nearly any list of employers' most in-demand skills and you're bound to see "writing" or "communication." The Writing and Communication Arts degree equips you with a solid foundation in transferable skills that are sought-after in nearly every position and in any industry.

As a Writing and Communication Arts major, you'll learn to master both the creative and practical aspects of writing.

Todays’ varied platforms demand a deep grasp of specific writing skills, along with individualized communications strategies. The Writing and Communication Arts program is designed to deliver both.

Courses such as “Writing for Social Media” delve into the intricacies of tailoring language for specific platforms and audiences, and the “Editing and Publishing” course provides a 360-degree immersion into the components of the writing process that come after the writing itself.

Writing and Communication Arts majors also enjoy courses such as "Creative Nonfiction" — which delves into literary journalism, travel writing, essays, and memoirs — and "Principles of Creative Writing," a course designed to fine-tune your ability to craft intriguing works of fiction.

You can’t write without being a voracious reader, so in addition to the work presented by your classmates, you’ll be reading poetry and short stories from the masters to help fuel your own creativity.

Ultimately, the B.A. in Writing and Communication Arts will open doors to opportunity for you, whether you plan on becoming a professional writer or entering a field, such as law or business, that values carefully constructed prose and the ability to inform, entertain, or persuade an audience.

It is a very humbling experience to mold someone else’s story into an article that can be printed in a paper, and then read by other individuals in the community.

It’s something that I think is a big deal, so I am extremely grateful that I was able to participate in this Field Period® experience.
